If you are playing the guitar, or are taking up playing guitar, there are many accessories that you need to have. These are things that will both aid your guitar playing and help you care for your guitar in the way that you should. I've included my list of essentials here so that you won't be caught out when the unexpected happens.
The first thing that you always need to have in your guitar case or bag at all times is an extra set of strings. At any point in time, strings are going to break on you. Keep extra strings so you can always replace them. You might want to also consider buying a string winder as it makes the process of string replacement a bit easier.
4 Slice Toaster
Keep a basic set of tools on you. You need something that can cut strings. You need an Allen Wrench (allen key) set that fits the sockets on your guitar to raise and lower strings and any other adjustments that your guitar might have on it.
If you are not on too tight a budget, get some effects peddles. These can completely change the sound of your guitar. You can get single effect peddles or multi-effects peddles. These will change the sound of your guitar and make practicing much more fun. This alone can make your guitar much more interesting giving you the motivation to play more often.
Keep a few extra picks on hand. Sometimes you drop and lose these and other times they snap and break on you. Consider also investing in some pick gel. This is a slightly sticky substance you can put on your fingers so your picks won't fly out of your hands as often.
Buy a tuner. These will make tuning up your guitar much easier. It's still good practice to try to do this manually, but in certain circumstances you won't be able to hear and will just need to depend on the tuner.
Also get strap locks for your guitar. These go on your guitar and your strap so that there is a solid connection. This helps prevent your guitar from falling off the strap and hitting the ground. This small investment is worth not having a broken or banged up guitar from falls.
Keep a duster and guitar friendly polish in the case with you. I always like to keep my guitar shining and feel much more like practicing on a nice shiny guitar! (Be careful though, some household polishes can actually damage the finish of your guitar!
