How often have you got yourself lost in a foreign city, or couldn't remember where your car was parked? Wouldn't it be great if a Sat Nav wasn't simply switched off when you got to your destination, but was of use AT your destination? Well, many current Sat Nav models really are! Take for example the Navigons from Germany. One of these superb devices won't just act as a great in-car Sat Nav, but also as a pedestrian guide and even point out places of interest, tourist information, ancient sites, museums, restaurants, toilets, etc!
The pedestrian features with portrait screen flip are available only on the Navigon 1410, 2410 and the 2510 Explorer available in Germany. Pedestrian Mode in landscape format is also on the 40 & 70 models. An equivalent feature is on the nuvi 550 from Garmin, and is designed for navigating round the outdoor world as it's shock and waterproof. Their "city" equivalent is the 3790T. All of these models are featured on the Sat Nav Heaven site if you'd like to check them out! Basically "pedestrian mode" makes the device much more sensitive. If you've ever tried to use a basic Sat Nav walking around town, it's pretty useless as nothing moves unless you run! However, with an expanded map, you'll know exactly where you are! What's more they have a feature called "Breadcrumb support" so you'll know where you've been on your tour round your new town or city; a great idea when on holiday.
4 Slice Toaster
How to get into "Pedestrian Mode" with your Navigon 14 or 24 series: 1) Press the "Options" button on the screen followed by the "Settings" button. A list of options will appear on the screen. 2) Touch "Route Profile" to bring up a second menu of options. 3) Choose "Speed Profile" and then "Pedestrian." The Navigon GPS unit will now calculate the time it would take to reach a location by foot and you'll be in "pedestrian mode."
In major cities and towns, it will even point out attractions and nearby Points Of Interest for you! Wow! A good tip, by the way is to buy a transparent case so that even in the rain, you can hold your Navigon in your hand as you negotiate the city streets! Have fun!
